Support for Families
Family support groups allow people to share experiences, feelings, coping strategies and solutions with each other. This is crucial for non-conventional families that suddenly form due to tragic or unusual circumstances. Connecting with others who are experiencing the same unique family challenges lets them know they are not alone and provides them with emotional support to strengthen themselves individually and as a family.
Members of a support group usually discover that similar feelings, worries, and problems are shared among members of the group. These commonalities help them understand one another and provide many benefits such as feeling less fearful, lonely and judged, gaining empowerment or control, improving coping skills, reducing stress, anxiety and depression, staying motivated to contribute positively as a family member, opening and talking honestly about their feelings, learning new ways and tools to effectively engage with others, adapt better coping skills, and finding available resources to assist with life challenges.
Research shows support groups are just as effective as one-on-one therapy because group members don’t feel judged, they are shown compassion and are inspired with hope as they see others progress. They also help develop socialization skills and self-awareness. Families headed by grandparents or guardians can improve and maintain their emotional well-being by participating in group therapy.
